Gilgit-Baltistan Regional Power System Upgrade – GIS-Based Feasibility

Gilgit-Baltistan Regional Power System Upgrade – GIS-Based Feasibility

To secure a stable and future-ready power network for Gilgit, Skardu, and Chilas, our team executed a comprehensive feasibility study and system upgrade plan for the Water and Power Department, Gilgit-Baltistan. The project integrated advanced GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping, consumer surveys, and a GIS-driven database management system to enable precise load forecasting and generation-demand analysis.

Civil and electrical engineers collaborated to model transmission routes and substation locations, ensuring that topographical constraints of the mountainous terrain were fully addressed. The GIS platform allowed accurate spatial analysis of demand clusters, helping planners determine optimal feeder configurations and future expansion corridors.

The study also incorporated resilience strategies to counter extreme weather events such as heavy snowfall, floods, and landslides—risks that frequently disrupt power distribution in the region. Recommendations included upgraded distribution lines, smart-grid integration, and renewable-energy tie-ins to reduce reliance on imported fuels.

Our final deliverables—feasibility reports, digital GIS maps, and a scalable database—equip the regional government with actionable data to plan phased investments and secure energy for the next decades. This project underscores how data-driven civil and electrical engineering can transform power reliability in one of Pakistan’s most challenging environments.
